Who we are for
The HOPE Service is for young people aged 11-18 who have complex mental health, social, emotional and behavioural difficulties. We work with young people who need more support than other agencies can give. We work with approximately 60 young people across the service at any one time, for an average of 6-9 months.
Meet the team
HOPE has a dedicated multi-agency team of social workers, nurses, teachers, psychologists, art/drama therapists, psychiatrists, occupational therapists, dieticians and support workers. Together the team is able to make positive interventions to support young people as they develop into responsible young adult members of the community. The Activity and Support Workers play a key role in the service and the delivery of care to young people. The main focus of HOPE is to help young people on a daily basis with:
• Problem solving
• Coping
• Learning and education
• Social skills
• Improving life chances
• Helping young people to feel better about themselves.
HOPE’s role is to:
· Prevent admissions of young people to Tier 4 inpatient units.
· Shorten the length of stay of young people in Tier 4 inpatient units.
· Prevent out of county fostering, community home and residential school placements for young people; and
· Prevent family breakdown, where a young person is likely to be placed out of county if this occurs.
HOPE consists of two core components:
Community Service
This provides intensive community support and interventions to prevent or shorten young peoples’ admission to Tier 4 Inpatient Units. HOPE works closely with Tier 4 to support young people home from hospital as soon as possible, with the support of Tier 3 CAMHS Clinics, Children’s Service teams, youth services, schools and local support networks. Young people and their families are supported in the community, with the opportunity for Day Programme involvement as appropriate. This supports young people to rejoin their local community and move into employment, education or training wherever possible. Young people and their families appreciate the opportunities that HOPE offers to them, equipping them with the skills and self -belief to move on to achieve their personal and educational potential.
Day Programme
This offers structured therapeutic, educational and recreational personalised programmes to young people. The programme is flexible to meet individual needs and offers a range of activities. HOPE is a registered Short Stay School. Education is offered to young people according to their ability and need, individually and in small groups. Emphasis is placed on supporting young people to enjoy their learning, and to celebrate their achievements. HOPE works alongside education colleagues to plan for discharge into appropriate community education wherever possible. We offer a variety of individual and group educational and therapeutic sessions, including:

· English

Outdoor Activities
HOPE works alongside Surrey Outdoor Education to offer an outdoor activity programme to young people. Activities include sailing, ropes, raft building, powerboating and a challenge course. The Day Programme also offers opportunities for trampolining, horse riding and trips to the gym.
Holiday Programme
We offer therapeutic and educational holiday activities to young people during the school holidays, so that we can continue to offer support. Examples of Holiday Programme activities include: London Zoo, animal sculpture making day, mask making and performance, canal boat trip, DJing, recording a CD, a trip to Box Hill, and the HOPE Sports Day. We hold regular Celebration of Achievement evenings for young people and their families.
How HOPE works with young people
We actively engage with every young person in the service. We listen to what young people have to say about their experiences and what they would like HOPE to help them achieve. Our creative day programme ensures that young people have access to a range of therapies, educational and recreational activities. We strive to provide a safe environment and to create a supportive atmosphere, in which we form therapeutic relationships with young people. Each young person has a HOPE Co-ordinator to plan their time in HOPE and to make sure their needs are met. Keyworkers work alongside young people, acting as a link between HOPE and home, and supporting young people to establish contact with services outside of HOPE, such as Connexions, Prince’s Trust, schools and colleges. We keep in touch with the young person’s support network through regular HOPE Reviews, which young people are invited to so that they can give their views. We have a weekly Young Peoples’ Forum which gives them the opportunity to discuss any relevant issues and ideas to improve the service they receive from HOPE.
